MEDICATION HOLDS

GLP-1 and SGLT-2 Medications: Read this section only if you take medications for diabetes or weight loss. If you do not, skip to DAY OF PROCEDURE instructions.

  • If you take these for diabetes, contact your primary care provider or diabetes doctor (endocrinologist) for blood sugar instructions
  • IMPORTANT: If you are scheduled at a Fairview Hospital (Woodwinds, St. Johns, Southdale, Fairview Ridges), a nurse will call you 2 weeks before your procedure to discuss GLP-1 and SGLT-2 medication holds. For all other hospital procedures, follow instructions below unless a hospital instructs otherwise.

 Continue your clear liquid diet as directed in your colonoscopy prep


GLP-1 Medications

Daily or Twice Daily Injections (such as Victoza)

  • Stop the day before and the day of your procedure

Weekly Injections (such as Trulicity, Ozempic, Wegovy, Bydureon, Mounjaro):

  • Stop 7 days before your procedure

Semaglutide tablets taken by mouth (such as Rybelsus or Wegovy):

  • Stop 7 days before your procedure

SGLT-2 Medications

Oral pill (Such as Invokana, Farxiga, Jardiance, Steglatro):

  • Stop 4 days before your procedure

DAY OF PROCEDURE

Nothing by Mouth (NPO)

Do NOT eat, drink, or put anything in your mouth starting 3 HOURS before your procedure

This includes:

  • Sips of water
  • Candy
  • Gum

Nicotine & Tobacco

  • 3 hours before your procedure:
    • Stop all nicotine-containing products (cigarettes, vapes, smokeless tobacco, pouches)
  • 8 hours before your procedure:
    • Do NOT use chewing tobacco

Substances

  • Do NOT use THC, marijuana, or illicit drugs
Failure to follow these instructions may result in the cancellation of your procedure

Jewelry & Piercings

  • Remove all head and neck jewelry, including:
    • Earrings
    • Necklaces
    • Nose rings
    • Facial piercings
    • Oral piercings
  • Oral piercings must be removed; if they cannot be removed, your procedure may be cancelled

Dentures

  • Dentures will need to be removed before your procedure
    • Avoid using strong adhesives on the day of your procedure
