Hemorrhoid banding is a minimally invasive, in-office procedure used to treat symptomatic internal hemorrhoids. At MNGI Digestive Health, the procedure involves placing a small rubber band around the base of the internal hemorrhoid. This causes the hemorrhoid to fall off within 1–2 weeks. Patients are required to undergo three treatments in 5-8 week intervals for the best long-term results.

When You Should Consult an MNGI Physician

You should consider scheduling an appointment with an MNGI gastroenterologist if you experience:

  • Bright red rectal bleeding that persists or recurs
  • Mucous discharge or fecal soiling from hemorrhoids
  • Anal discomfort, itching, or swelling that affects daily activities
  • A prolapsing hemorrhoid (bulging tissue that does not go back in on its own or returns frequently)
  • Hemorrhoid symptoms that do not improve after conservative treatments
  • Any bleeding or bowel habit change that might need evaluation beyond hemorrhoids

Even though hemorrhoids are common, bleeding from the rectum should always be evaluated, especially if you are unsure of the cause. Our MNGI providers can help determine whether hemorrhoids are the source or if additional testing is needed.

If hemorrhoid banding is not the best option for you, your MNGI provider will discuss alternative treatments and next steps tailored to your health needs.
