Every May, we observe Hepatitis Awareness Month, a time to increase understanding, fight stigma, and promote early detection and treatment for the millions of people living with hepatitis. At MNGI Digestive Health, we’re committed to educating our community and delivering expert care for patients living with liver disease. This month, we’re dispelling some of the most common myths about hepatitis and providing trusted resources to help you stay informed.

What Is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by viral infections (Hepatitis A, B, and C), but it can also result from autoimmune diseases, medications, alcohol use, and toxins. Left untreated, hepatitis can lead to serious complications such as liver damage, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. But with early diagnosis and proper care, many forms of hepatitis are manageable and in some cases, even curable. Learn more about our hepatitis and liver disease care!

Common Myths About Hepatitis

Myth 1: Hepatitis only affects people who use drugs.
While sharing needles can spread hepatitis B and C, the virus can also be transmitted through unprotected sex, childbirth, unsterile tattoos or piercings, and in rare cases, contaminated food or water. Anyone can be at risk.

Myth 2: You can tell if someone has hepatitis.
Many people with hepatitis don’t show symptoms until liver damage has already occurred. That’s why routine screening and early diagnosis are so important.

Myth 3: There's no cure for hepatitis.
Hepatitis A usually resolves on its own, hepatitis B can often be managed long-term, and hepatitis C is now curable for most patients with modern antiviral medications.

Myth 4: If you feel fine, you don’t need to worry.
Hepatitis can silently damage the liver for years before symptoms appear. If you’ve ever been exposed to risk factors, getting tested is the only way to know for sure.
