Each year on May 14, Minnesota recognizes Hmong American Day, a time to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of the Hmong community. This day also commemorates the bravery of Hmong veterans connected to the Secret War in Laos and acknowledges the journeys of Hmong families who resettled in the United States.
At MNGI Digestive Health, we see this day as an important opportunity to also raise awareness about a critical health issue: colorectal cancer.
Why Colorectal Cancer Awareness Matters
Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The most effective way to prevent colorectal cancer is through screening, specifically a colonoscopy.
A colonoscopy is considered the gold standard because it not only detects cancer early but can also prevent it by identifying and removing precancerous polyps during the same procedure.
Understanding the Need in the Hmong Community
According to 2023 data from Minnesota Community Measurement, screening rates for Hmong‑speaking patients were 47.6%, compared with a statewide average of 70.4%. For many Hmong families, conversations about digestive health or cancer screening may not always happen openly. For others, it is common to only seek medical care when a health issue arises, as routine preventive care is not common. Cultural perspectives, language barriers, and limited access to culturally appropriate healthcare information can all play a role in lower screening rates.
By increasing awareness and encouraging open conversations, we can help remove barriers and support better health outcomes across the community.
In Memory of Leng
The passing of Leng Vang on June 18, 2025, deeply impacted the Hmong community across the country. A healthcare worker and beloved Hmong storyteller based in California, Leng built a strong online presence through his storytelling and community engagement, gaining more than 23,000 YouTube followers and over 9 million views. Following his diagnosis with Stage 3C colon cancer, many in the Hmong community followed his journey closely. His story helped bring greater awareness to colorectal cancer and highlighted the importance of early detection, preventive care, and open conversations about health within the Hmong community. Though he was not based in Minnesota, his influence and passing resonated deeply with Hmong families nationwide and served as a powerful reminder of the importance of colorectal cancer screening and education.
When Should You Get a Colonoscopy?
For those at average risk, colorectal cancer screening with a colonoscopy should begin at age 45. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors, your provider may recommend starting earlier.
A colonoscopy is a safe, routine procedure performed by a specialist and is one of the most powerful tools to prevent colorectal cancer.
